LENT
Early Spring | Beginning Ash Wednesday
Historically Lent has been a season of penitence and fasting. Churches have used this season as a time of reflection and in some cases, preparation for baptism. The season lasts for forty days, excluding Sundays. The amount of time set aside for Lent was first recorded at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD. The season is modeled after Jesus’ time spent fasting in the desert for forty days as we as the forty years the Israelites spent wandering in the desert. Lent concludes with Holy Week: Palm Sunday/Sunday of the Passion, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday.
Liturgucal Color: Purple except for Good Friday and Holy Saturdy where black is often used.
