Defining Liturgy

Merriam Webster defines liturgy as:

  1. a eucharistic rite

  2. a rite or body of rites prescribed for public worship

  3. a customary repertoire of ideas, phrases, or observances

The word liturgy may carry with it baggage for you, or perhaps it recalls fond memories of services gone by. Many understand the liturgy simply as the order of service laid out in the hymnal, however, that that is a much smaller understanding of what liturgy actually is. Liturgy is a work done by the people. So, what does that mean? Well, essentially, our services our ordered into a liturgy. That may be formal (very structured and written out) or it may be informal (often seemingly improvised), either way, a liturgy.

Our hope is that through this site we can together gain a broader understanding of what liturgy looks and sounds like, and we'd love for you to join us on this journey!
